Good Headset, with exceptions

I bought one of these after talking to a friend who was using one. The noise canceling aspect works great. So, I was very excited when mine arrived. Unfortunately, the person on the other end of the line was hearing an echo of their own voice when speaking to me. Ume Voice agreed to look at the headset so I sent it in. They determined that nothing was wrong with it and returned it to me. The echo problem has continued, however, and Ume Voice is unwilling to replace the headset.

Other cons on this headset are thats its really big and the wires are long and cumbersome.

If it didnt echo, Id love it in spite of its somewhat unwieldiness, but all things considered Im giving it 2 stars.

Poor audio reception

Pros: Filters background noise well
Cons: You can barely be heard at the end other end

The company website says of the model I bought: "With the Boom "O", you will be heard loud and clear even at a whisper. Since theres no need to speak over surrounding noise, you can keep your conversations private and avoid disturbing people around you."

This isnt true at all with this model. People at the other end of my conversations said my voice was low. When I recorded it and played it back, it was like I was in a different room. The customer service person at the company said this model has that problem. So why sell it and promote it like it really works well?

So I could have purchased a $5 headset for my Centro, but decided, based on the advertised background noise cancelation feature and apparent quality of product, along with the high price, that this must be a a decent headset. Boy was I wrong. Headset came in today, and I tested it in three situations. - I first recorded my voice in a quiet room. My voice was real tinny, scratchy, and cheap sounding. There also seemed to be "background noise" although the room was closed and very quiet. Next, I recorded myself talking normally while walking through the house. A television was on in an adjacent room and a ceiling fan was also on. My voice was again very tinny and scratchy and, although the house was fairly quiet, it seemed all background noises were amplified. In the last test, I tried it while sitting in the living room, with the TV on and the ceiling fan running - far below the intensity of sound that is in the advertisements for the headset. The headset seemed to PREFER background noises over my own voice... they actually seemed amplified, and my voice was barely discernible. I also lowered my voice to a whisper, as in the advertisement, and my voice was no longer discernible. I am an engineer, and would be able to identify any obvious mechanical issues... In other words, I was using the headset correctly and it did not appear to be faulty. If you want a headset with the quality of a freebie that would come with a phone purchase or one you could buy at a convenience store on the fly, and money is absolutely no object to you, and you ignored the advertisement for this unit, then you might be ok with this. Other than that, this unit is not worth more than a couple dollars, let alone $150. I have no idea what the glowing "customer comments" on the Boom site are referring to, but its NOT this headset. Worse purchase Ive made in a long time.

Impedance mismatch!!

Cons: Doesnt work with Treos

Ume technical support says theres an impedance mismatch between Treo phones and their product!!

I bought two (one for myself and one for my wife) and constantly got crackling sounds. If you accidentally rotate the jack even slightly your call can be instantly dropped!!

If you buy one, plan on shipping it to Ume for modifications to fix the impedance problem. However, they are seriously backlogged. Ive been trying to get mine repaired for two months.
